Our progress on watching our weight has been a fair success after just a couple of weeks. We've given up regular soft drinks for diet (I didn't think we could do it), we've stopped eating out (hadn't been doing much of that anyway) and have been making more sensible choices at the grocery store.
We've decided to have a good supply of Weight Watchers or Lean Cuisine frozen dinners on hand, and we've stopped buying foods that are ridiculously fattening (like Tombstone frozen pizzas, potato chips and dip, etc.) One of our dietary staples used to be these frozen chicken kievs, or chicken cordon bleu's. They are pre-cooked and we used to just heat them up. Turns out each one had something like 16 grams of fat. So swapping these out with the Weight Watcher/Lean Cuisine, and then switching regular soft drinks with diet, has almost undoubtedly cut our calories by at least a third. Roomie says he's already feeling the difference in his clothing.
I've been getting into using dry rubs of late. We use one of Emeril's rubs, but I found two others at the Whole Foods store last week. One, called a Caribbean rub, gives meats more of an Indian curry flavor. I bought another rub that is really great on red meats. We were looking for an alternative to my usual MOA -- soy sauce based marinades. But I've found they are so much easier and faster to use. Pretty much slather it on and start cooking.
Using rubs and then cooking on our George Foreman grill means dinner can be on the table in 15 minutes.
Our only weakness is eating at work. I had been in the habit of cooking in the morning and packing my meals for nights before I slept for the day, but between TiVo and our wide assortment of DVD movies and TV series we both received for Christmas, I've been spending the morning on the couch watching TV. My latest favorite show is the new incarnation of Battlestar Gallactica. The production is very impressive, and the story line is interesting. I like what they've done with Baltar. the traitor that turns the human race over to the Cylons. In the original version, Baltar is a member of the ruling council. In the new version, he's a doctor that gives his Cylon bitch girlfriend the backdoor codes to the human computer defense program. Now he's suffering from hallucinations, affording him dialogues with that Cylon girlfried, who devilishly enjoys racking his balls.
I'm still watching Star Trek: Enterprise. They had a good start with the first several episodes of the season, with Brent Spiner making an appearance. They've brought on writers that worked on several popular Star Trek novels, so the story lines were more in line with what Trekkies (I prefer that term to Trekkers) want to see. Stuff like Surak (father of Vulcan logic), mind melds, etc. The last episode was a step backward; a story line about a character trying to bring his son back to life after a transporter accident.
