Well, here's a weird one for ya.
I don't sleep well unless I am working.
No, I'm not saying that I sleep while I'm at work. What I'm saying is that, when I have more than a day off, I get to the point where I just can't sleep. I find myself scheduling for extra days just so I can maintain a somewhat normal sleep schedule (normal for me, anyway, since I usually sleep from 9a-5p since I work nights).
It's not that I am in love with my job. I do like my job, and believe I am excellent at it, but don't think I'm missing work, or have this weird desire to spend my off days with my patients (that boundary is well fixed, I never cross it, my patients are my patients, not my friends).
It's not that my job gets me a whole lot of exercise either. Yes, it's tiring, and at times physically taxing, but the nurses I work with are very good about helping one another out with physical lifting and turning. I also owe a great deal to a physical therapist I ran into while I was in nursing school, who taught us how to safely slide a patient down onto the floor, instead of pulling a He-Man Maneuver to get a patient back into bed (usually by sacrificing one's back). I've slid many a patient safely to the floor, where they stayed until I could find the help to lift them properly into bed.
It might be the social interaction. I seldom go anywhere while I'm off. So my days at work might be the only social interaction I allow myself (but why would that have anything to do with sleep?)
I'm probably watching too much television. Especially the commercials (we have TiVo but I usually forget to fast-forward through them). My favorites:
There's a commercial for a bank in Scotland. This couple is about to take their wedding vows, but the groom starts spewing all these contractual disclosures, and this other guy steps in and gets the "I Do" and the girl.
The GEICO commercial that sets up the audience for another crazy reality show (a married couple that must live their first year in a house where the ceilings are only 4 feet tall). That one keeps you in the dark right up until the punch line.
Then there are the commercials where someone stuck at a sales counter "beeps" and "boops" at a clueless sales representative (poking fun at the voicemail hell so many of us get stuck in when we call a business on the phone.) My favorite is the one where that crazy-looking red-head starts giving options in Spanish.
OK off to bed.
