I've been expanding my cooking skills lately. As a result, we have been eating much more healthy these past few months. We also have dramatically reduced the number of times we eat out (and now, McDonalds is no longer a daily or every-other-day entry on my debit card statement).
It all started 3 months ago when Roomie got his braces. We started cooking soft foods, and gave up a lot of fast food that messes up his braces. At first, this meant lots of nights of macaroni-and-cheese dinners, but our shift away from fast food has meant more frequent visits to the grocery store, which has meant a near- total substitution of our diet from fast food / restaurant foods to eat-in.
I've been cooking a lot more filipino as a result. Roomie has been expanding his tastes, so that he just as often eats bok choy with boiled beef as macaroni-and-cheese. I've even found a recipe for General Tsao's Chicken, one of his favorites (it also finally got ma a good recipe for that asian brown sauce that seems such a well-guarded secret).
The summer heat here is, in a word, terrible. Most of my days are spent in the apartment, reading books, watching TiVo, or working on the computer. I can hardly wait until the return of cooler temperatures (which won't happen until September). Staying in the apartment all day isn't as horrible as it sounds, so long as the apartment is stocked. Hell, I haven't even been bored enough to watch all of Roomie's DVD collection.
