Today makes 90 days being back in the gym. I've lost 20 pounds, and figure I need to lose/replace another 20. I'm probably overdoing it. I go 7 days a week, and twice a week, I lift weights in addition to the daily 60 minutes of cardio on the Precor machine. I know all the literature says fat burning occurs at 55-65% of maximum heart rate, but I have lately been going full out, as high as 95% of max (at 65%, I don't feel like I'm even working). I am amazed at how far I've come in 90 days.
I still have a long way to go. I dug up a pair of pants from my pre-nursing days. Not just tight. Un-clasp-able. It got me feeling depressed for a few minutes, but that WAS more than 8 years ago.
Carl Sagan's Cosmos
They're replaying Carl Sagan's Cosmos on the Science Channel. Very Cool, especially his unique voice and the BBBillions and BBBillions bit. Interestingly, his whole stance is that "evolution is fact, not theory... it really happened." I'm amazed the Intelligent Design folks haven't set up protests.
Do I believe in Evolution? Of course I do. Do I believe in God? Of course I do. I think God is the intelligent force behind evolution. Adam and Eve really did happen. It just took BBBillions and BBBillions of years to do it. Dunno, seems obvious to me.
I was sorting through one of our closets, and stumbled upon my old copy of Arnold Schwarzenegger's Encyclopedia of Modern Bodybuilding. It's still the best publication on bodybuilding I've ever read. Sadly, it doesn't seem available anymore except through used venues.
When I first bought this book, I was working with a nurse, Gwen, who is the most free-spirited person I have ever met. She would live a minimal existence, saving up all of her money to fly overseas and climb mountains. She'd be gone for 3-6 months at a time doing all sorts of fascinating things.
I don't know how we got into bodybuilding together. I think we both joined Wolfgang's Gym (the first one), and saw each other there. We decided to work out together, and I made pretty good progress. She even went on to do some competitive shows in the local area.
When I bought the book, I'd bring it with me and we'd refer to it during our workouts. It would be on the floor and others would politely ask if they could refer to it for reference. Those were good days for bodybuilding. We were in there for 3 hours every other day.
